Fire Division

Outdoor Fireplace Permits

The Norfolk Fire Division implemented the following for the use of outdoor fireplaces:

Patio type fireplaces are allowed in the City of Norfolk when a burn permit has been issued by the fire division.

Permits will be issued annually and will be available for inspection when the unit is in operation.  If the fire division receives a complaint about smoke in the area you will be asked to extinguish the fire at that time.  If multiple complaints about smoke are received, the permit will be revoked and not reissued.

All outdoor fire places will be placed on a noncombustible surface while in use and shall maintain a 15' distance from the nearest structure.

Each permit is a personal privilege and the responsibility of the permit holder.  Any fire may be extinguished and the permit revoked if the permit holder is in violation of the code and/or the fire becomes a nuisance to the neighborhood.

There is no fee for the permit and these permits can be obtained at either Fire Station 1 (701 Koenigstein Avenue) or Fire Station (2920 W. Benjamin Avenue).
